Sacrifices
Jun 10th, 2010, 4:11pm

1st round of a recent tournament, I am white, I couldn't resist here:

2r3k1/1q2n1b1/p3p2p/1p1PPpp1/1P1P4/PB3QP1/1B5P/4R1K1 w - - 0 30

30.d6?

Not sure if it works in the end, and I lost Smiley

http://www.centurionchessclub.co.za/dnn/Tournament/CenturionOpen2010/Results/ASe ctionFull/tabid/98/Default.aspx I may post all the games later.

Chess?  No sly / not so sly / completely gratuitous personal insults? No obvious spelling mistakes? What's going on here?

Anyway, I'm not very good at speculatively sacrificing material - it doesn't agree with my nervous disposition.  But I have found a couple of quasi-sacrifices that I've made over the years which I'm quite proud of.  What do you make of these two?

2r3k1/1q3ppp/p3p3/3p1b2/3Pn3/1P2PN2/PQ3PPP/RN4K1 b - - 0 19

1...Nxf2

r4rk1/pp1n1pp1/1bp1b2p/8/1P1PPq2/P1NQ4/3NB1PP/R4RK1 b - - 0 16

1...Ne5

Grin Like your sense of humour Jimbob!

LOL, it's been a long day.  embarrassed
Nah! It's not really a sac anyway, more of a combo!

 1. Ne5 Rxf4
 2. Nxd3 Bxd3
 3. Bxd4+   Followed by Bxc3, so Black ends up a pawn up. Not bad though Smiley

Yeah - neither of them are proper sacrifices: in the first one, white (sensibly) didn't take the knight with either queen or king after 1...Nxf2 and in the second one, he can take my queen but I can take his straight back.  Still takes a bit of nerve to move another piece when your queen is sitting there en prise, though.

Back to Bill's original post - I don't recognise many of the names from the NE circuit in this Centurions tournament, unless they are playing under rather impressive aliases...A long way to go to play chess - the furthest away that I've ever played a chess game was on a Greek island on holiday.  You got free drinks if you beat the bar owner.  I lost.

Here is one of my games from this season : I'm White v Alan Reed from Stokesley (played in the 1st round of the Cleveland Plate Competition) black has just played Na5.

Play continued 12 Bxf7+ (the sacrifice!! - doesn't look like one) ....but after Kf8, the queen can no longer defend the bishop.

The game continued
13 Qc2 Kxf7 14 e5 g5 15 exf6 gxh4 16 Qh7+ Kxf6 17 Qxh6+? (there is a forced mate in 4 here if you can spot it) Kf5 18 Nxh4+ Kg4 19 h3 mate !!!! - not often you get to deliver mate with this move !!!

An amusing final position

16.Qh7+! completely refutes blacks attempts to hang on to the extra material.  What happens if black plays more modestly with 15...Qxf6 ?

Yes you are quite right 15.....gxh4 is a mistake, black cannot hang onto his extra material as the game demonstrates.
After 15.....Qxf6 (Best) 16 Bg3 Qf5 17 Qd1 Kg8 18 Rc1 = according to Fritz, but I think I prefer White's position.

Very nice, now can anyone raise the bar? Maybe a rook?

Always up for a challenge  Wink - not sure you can class this as a proper sacrifice as it leads to immediate resignation. Its another game of mine played in 1985 (showing my age now !!!!), I've published the whole game (only 18 moves) to show the build up to the sac.
The game got published in a couple of magazines at the time, and is still on some databases today Cool.

White : Steve Cole Black : Andy Stoker
1) e4 e6 2) d4 d5 3) Nd2 c5 4) exd5 exd5 5) Bb5+ Nc6 6) Qe2+ Be7 7) dxc5 Nf6 8) Nb3 0-0 9) Nf3 Ne4
10) Be3 Re8 11) 0-0-0 Nxc5 12) Bc4 Nxb3+ 13) Bxb3 Be6 14) h4 a5 15) Ng5 Bxg5 16) hxg5 g6 17) Qf3 Qc8??

Not too difficult to spot the sac..............18) Rxh7!! and Black resigned on the spot

Here is a link to an old website http://users.4mymail.co.uk/honkywallah/mychessviewer/waltonvreynolds.html

Not sure if you would class them as sacrifices but i manage to get shot of a rook, queen, pawn and knight all in the same game.
