ECF White form
Apr 16th, 2010, 5:55pm

Is this it? http://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Membership-Application -Form.pdf

We have a few new members who (I believe) need to fill one in.

1. Do they/we need to send any money? If they do wouldn't it be best to wait till the start of the new chess season?

2. Isn't it a requirement to play league and tournament chess to be a member of the ECF?

3. How much is the minimum required to play in the league etc I think its £11 am I correct.

Any help appreciated.  Smiley

Hi Colin.  To play chess in Cleveland a player must be a member of the ECF either direct or via an MO (Clevelands or Durhams)

The CCA registration fee is £4  and the ECF fee is £11. Sorry but they will have to pay this even if they only play one game in Cleveland. Dont know about Durham.

Steve and Peter can advise re the white form. (£1 liability if the ECF goes bust)

Which is very likely if the Government funds (DCMS Grant to the tune of £60k a year), if believed, are to be taken away from the ECF in the none-too-distant future!!  Angry

Which one Ernie, Cleveland or the ECF?

The new members will play in the Durham league, so, do I get them to fill in the white form above, send no money to the ECF and pay Durham... how much?

Membership update from the ECF.

The ECF Finance Council held a meeting today (17th April) and some headlines are on the following link...

http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1630

Basically game fee and MO voted to go up by 8% and direct memberships to go up by 25% and apparently the NCCU Rep voted against their given mandate !!! ( Shocked)

Thoughts please... ???

8% doesn't sound a lot I guess, but didn't it go up by 10% last year? Compounded, that's almost 19% in two years. Quite steep really.
As for Dave Farley voting against it, I guess he must have been advised to do so by NCCU council? Need more info on this one.

Thanks for the feedback Billy and for the clarification around percentages. It sounds like the ECF office seems to be the big white elephant and that's no disrespect to the people who work there either who have always seemed fairly reasonable nice people whenever I've had to contact them (around 3 times in my whole Chess life!).

Chess politics doesn't take up a lot of my time but I do find the makeup of the ECF expenditure interesting especially in this climate.

Its not the percentages of the increases that rile me here, its the reason(s) the ECF believe it should go up. As some of us are aware there are still many uncommunicative people high up in the ECF hierarchy and they don't seem to think that "normal" chess players need to know how this money is spent, and most players aren't bothered but I'm one of the "sad" few that thinks expenditure of our National Body should be scrutinised and spent wisely as I don't think a fair deal of it is done so.  Sad
