LOL, who am I kidding. Hey, isn't it about time a team residing in Cleveland actually won the CLEVELAND league.
That raises an interesting point; 'Cleveland County' does not exist and has not existed for some time.
In 1968 Teesside was formed out of parts of Durham, North Yorks and the old Middlesbrough Boro. In 1974 Teesside was scrapped and Cleveland County was formed bringing in Hartlepool Boro.
Cleveland Chess did not have its 'County' identity within the old BCF until 1974; prior to that it was part of Durham Chess Associaion ie 'Durham & Teesside chess association. In 1974 we were given our own identity in the chess world and able to field county teams.
On 1st April 1996 Cleveland as a County was scrapped as a politcal entity however when it was Cleveland POlice/Fire and some other organisations were retained under the banner 'Cleveland'. Cleveland County Chess Association became Cleveland Chess Association.
For geographical purposes Cleveland no longer exists. We now have Unitary authorities, Redcar & Cleveland, Middesbrough and South East Cleveland, Stockton and Hartletpool. All part of the Tees Valley Economic area.
Historically Darlington have played in the Teesside/Cleveland league while never having been part of the designated geographic area. Peterlee have also never been part of the geographic area but we like them anyway
